What is an Anti-Lock Braking System?

Anti-Lock Braking System is a safety device. It prevents the locking up or sliding of wheels when drivers apply sudden brakes. ABS is an active safety feature. It assists the driver in maintaining steering control when applying heavy brakes.

Wheel Speed Sensors

Wheel speed sensors are located at each wheel or on the drivetrain. These sensors are responsible for tracking the rotational speed of each wheel. These sensors send information to the electronic control unit

Electronic Control Unit (ECU)

ECU receives information from the wheel speed sensors. It manipulates receiving information using pre-built instructions. Finally, gives suitable instructions to perform necessary action.

Monitoring Wheel Deceleration

In this step, ECU compares the rotational speed of each wheel with the other. In case of a difference in the decelerating rate of wheels, it shows the symptoms of wheel lock-up.

Modulating Brake Pressure

When the wheel locks up, the ABS system starts applying the brake pressure to that wheel. To control brake pressure, it uses a hydraulic modulator or an electronic actuator. It releases and reapplies the brake pressure to divide the brake pressure among all wheels.

Controlled Braking

The Anti-Lock braking system prevents the wheel from locking up completely by adjusting the brake pressure. It helps the driver to maintain steering control over the vehicle. It works during hard braking or when driving on slippery surfaces.

Brake Pedal Feedback

The ABS system provides feedback to the driver through the brake pedal. The pedal may vibrate or pulsate, indicating that ABS is actively controlling the braking system.

Wheel lock-up is dangerous for both cars and passengers. So, Anti-Lock Brake System helps the drivers to control emergency braking behavior. It reduces the risk of skidding, improves stability, and shortens the stopping distance.

These automatic features of cars assist to drive safely. Don’t fully depend on these systems. Follow necessary driving guidelines to stay safe and happy on the roads.

What is anti-lock braking system and how it works?

Anti-Lock Braking System is a safety device that prevents the locking up or sliding of wheels when drivers apply brakes in severe conditions.

What are the benefits of anti-lock braking system?

It reduces the risk of accident, prevents the wheel locking-up, avoid sliding of wheels.
